Writers On The Move: There's a Gorilla in the Phone Booth! - The danger...: by Shirley Corder
Great advice for writers who create flashbacks.
Flashbacks can be incredibly useful tools, done just right. But there are certainly times when they will not work, such as letting the scene segue into a dull, "telling" moment for the sake of an aside that might seem relevant.
It's tempting to flesh out your character with tons of details and experiences that help them look like they've had a life beyond the page. This is completely fine in the right time and place for your character. Don't worry! The reader will still understand what your character is like by how they react to the tension and by their choices throughout the rest of the book.
Keep the tension high! Remember the moment of the action and work with that.
